CSV to Markdown table

Open a CSV file, fix it in the grid, copy it as Markdown.

Stays on your device – Your CSV file is read in your browser and not uploaded - nothing reaches our server.

Drop your files here

or

You can also paste with Ctrl+V.

Size:

Still editable before you copy: change cells, add rows and columns, align columns.

What you type is processed in your browser and never sent to us.

How to do it

  1. Pick a file

Or drop it in. It is read in your browser, not uploaded.

  2. Fix it up

Change cells, add rows and columns, align columns.

  3. Copy the Markdown

Columns are padded, so the source stays readable.

What this is for

Turning a CSV into a Markdown table by hand is busywork: pipes, a separator row, counting columns. Here the file is read, lands in a grid and can still be changed - a row out, a heading reworded, a column right-aligned.

The two things that usually go wrong are taken care of. The separator: German Excel writes semicolons, English Excel commas, and a database export often a tab. Which one it is gets decided by which character yields the same number of fields on every line - not by which occurs most often, because with amounts like "1,234.56" that would always be the comma. And the character set: the CSV German Excel writes is Windows-1252, not UTF-8, and read as UTF-8 every umlaut turns into a replacement character.

Both are named under the table after reading. A separator guessed wrongly can be set by hand.

Common questions

No. It is read in your browser and never leaves your device.

Semicolon, comma, tab and the pipe. The guess is not made by counting characters but by asking which one produces the same number of fields on every line. Which one it was is stated in the result, and it can be overruled.

They should not be. UTF-8 is tried strictly first; only a file that is not valid UTF-8 is read as Windows-1252 - which is exactly what German Excel writes. The result says which one was used.

A quoted field may contain the separator and even a line break, and both are read correctly. In the Markdown table the break becomes a space, because a Markdown cell is a single line.

Up to 500 rows and 40 columns are taken over. That is a practical limit rather than a technical one - nobody reads a Markdown table with a thousand rows. If the file is bigger, the tool says so.
