Split a PDF by file size

For attachment limits: parts that stay under 10, 20 or 25 MB.

Stays on your device – Your PDF is processed in your browser and is not uploaded.

How to do it

  1. Pick your PDF

Drop the file in or choose it.

  2. Give the limit

10, 20 or 25 MB with one click - or type your own number.

  3. Split

The tool finds the largest parts that still fit under your limit.

  4. Check and download

Below you see how many parts there are and how large the largest is. Several come back as a ZIP.

What this is for

The mail will not send: 34 MB, and 20 are allowed. The government portal takes at most 10 MB per file. The scan of the documents is too large for the upload. This page exists for exactly that.

You give the limit - or click one of the common ones - and get as many parts as it takes. Each stays under your limit, and afterwards you see how many there are and how large the largest is.

Why this is not trivial: how large a part turns out is only known once it has been written - compression and shared fonts make it unpredictable. The naive route measures after every page and needs five hundred complete writes for a five-hundred-page document. Here it doubles while it still fits and then narrows down by halving: about two dozen attempts instead of five hundred.

A case that really happens: a single page can already be larger than your limit - a page with a big scan bursts any 2 MB limit on its own. It then stands alone in a part that is over the limit, and the tool says so. Refusing would be worse, and quietly producing an oversized part worse still.

If the file is large because of its images, the other route is often better: shrink it first, and it may fit without splitting at all. The link is under the tool.

Common questions

No. The splitting runs entirely in your browser. For documents headed to a government office especially, that is the difference that matters.

Because it splits by size, not by page count. The tool puts as many pages into each part as fit under your limit - with a document that has a few image-heavy pages, that is sometimes more and sometimes fewer.

Then it stands alone in a part that is over your limit, and the tool tells you. A single page cannot be split further. Shrinking helps more in that case.

Under five seconds at five hundred pages. The trick is to search the pages per part by doubling rather than trying page by page.

Yes, in every part. Pages are carried across as objects, not redrawn as pictures.
