Trim a video

Cut the start and the end - in seconds, without re-encoding.

Stays on your device – The video is processed in your browser. It is not uploaded.

The first click loads about 10 MB of processing module. After that the trimming itself takes seconds - it is copied, not recalculated.

or

You can also paste with Ctrl+V.

Without the tick it is copied: fast, but the cut lands on the nearest keyframe and can be several seconds out. With the tick it is re-encoded: exact, but many times slower and the picture is recalculated.

What you type is processed in your browser and never sent to us.

How to do it

  1. Pick your video

Drop the file in or choose it.

  2. Set start and end

Both in seconds. The player above helps you find the spot.

  3. Precise or fast?

Without the tick it is done in seconds; with it, frame-accurate and slow.

  4. Go and download

The result stays for 24 hours in the list under the tool.

What this is for

The first twenty seconds are wobble, and at the end the camera is still running after everyone has stopped talking. Both gone, the rest stays.

This takes seconds, not minutes. Because nothing is recalculated: the frames are copied into a new file untouched. A half-hour video is therefore done as quickly as a half-minute one.

The price for that is stated above the button. A copy can only begin at a keyframe - a fully stored frame - and depending on the recording those sit one to ten seconds apart. Your cut lands on the nearest one. The tool tells you afterwards how long the result actually came out, and if it has to be precise you tick the box and let it re-encode. Then it takes as long as it always takes elsewhere.

The first click loads about 10 megabytes of processing module. After that it stays in the browser, for all the video tools here.

Common questions

No. The processing runs in your browser - the first click loads a module that does the work on your device. With a video that is often hundreds of megabytes, that is incidentally also the faster route.

Because a video is not made of complete frames. Most frames store only the difference from the one before; only now and then is there a complete one, a keyframe. Cutting without re-encoding has to start at one of those - otherwise the first frame has nothing to build on. Depending on the recording they sit one to ten seconds apart.

Tick "cut exactly". The video is re-encoded, the cut sits on the frame - but it takes many times longer, and the picture is recalculated once, so it loses a little quality.

On a computer up to about a gigabyte, on a phone considerably less. Memory use is roughly twice the file size, and on a phone the browser ends the tab without warning if it goes too high. That is why the limits are lower there, and large files get a warning beforehand.

It is cut along with the picture and stays unchanged. If you want to be rid of it there is a separate tool - the link is under this one.

Into the list under the tool, for 24 hours. That lives in your browser, on your device - not with us. It survives a page reload but can be cleared sooner if your browser needs the room. It is not the place for the only copy of your video.
