Calculate age

To the year, month and day - not an approximation.

What you type is processed in your browser and never sent to us.

How to do it

  1. Enter the date of birth

The field is pre-filled with an example - just overwrite it.

  2. Read the result

Age, total days, weekday of birth and next birthday appear straight away.

  3. Nothing to confirm

It calculates as you type; there is no button.

What this is for

For a form, an application, or out of curiosity: exactly how old somebody is today, to the day.

Age is not days divided by 365.25. That approximation is a day or two out for most people and persists anyway - because it looks right. What is actually counted is how often the birthday has been: somebody born on 1 January 1990 is still 35 on 31 December 2025 and 36 the next day. No average of day lengths produces that step.

Beside the age you get the total days lived, the weekday of the birth and the next birthday with its date and distance.

29 February gets a decided rule. A birthday that only exists every fourth year has to be settled one way or the other. The calculation follows German civil law (§ 188 BGB): in the other years you turn a year older on 1 March. The note only appears for the people it concerns.

Common questions

No. The calculation runs in your browser; the date of birth does not leave your device.

Because that does not measure what age means. Age counts how often the birthday has been - a step once a year, not steady growth. The approximation is a day or two out depending on the date of birth, and precisely on the days around the birthday when people check.

In leap years on 29 February, otherwise on 1 March. That follows § 188(3) of the German civil code: where the month lacks the day, the year of life ends with the end of the last day of that month - so with the end of 28 February. On the 28th you are not quite there; from 1 March you are. Many people celebrate on the 28th anyway; that changes nothing about the age.

It makes no difference. The calculation is in whole days at midnight UTC - otherwise the two days around a clock change would be 23 or 25 hours long, and the day count would be out by one depending on the season.

Not here - this tool works out the age today. For the distance between any two dates there is the date calculator; the link is below.
